Keeping remote workers engaged and motivated

Ive worked ‘remotely’ for over 25 years. Working from home can be a life changer for some - and companies can benefit hugely from it. More engaged and happy staff leads to lower staff turnover, increased levels of business and efficiency.

BUT. If managed incorrectly home working staff can feel less involved and unimportant, and this can have the adverse effect - leading to staff looking elsewhere for companies where they will feel more valued.

One of the best ways to keep remote workers included is to talk to them - and get them engaging with other remote workers. Try to recreate the office camaraderie virtually.

One of the most effective ways to do this is also one of the easiest. Schedule a regular conference call with the team. It doesn’t have to be all ‘work work work’ - make it a fun way to kick off the day, or share a lunch and a chat.

EE offer a free ‘Group Calling’ service - and its open to users of all mobile networks, and landline users too.

The conference organiser preselects a ‘Pin number’ for accessing the call. This is 6 digits. Share this by e-mail with your attendees, remembering to include a conference time. At the appropriate time all attendees dial in, are requested to enter the PIN, and are placed in a queue until someone else joins. When everybody is online - let the call begin!

Its best to have some kind of structure - and let someone chair the call. But most of all make sure people are included - encourage debate.

These calls can be interesting and educational - but most of all they can be funny and something everybody can look forward to.
